Sprint is going to launch one of the most awaited smart phones- the Palm® Pre™ on June 6, 2009 in US. It will be available in all Sprint stores, Best Buy, Radio Shack and select Wal-Mart stores. You can also buy it online at Sprint.com. Palm Pre will cost $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate and two-year service agreement. Palm Pre utilities will run on the 3G wireless network in America. Sprint will offer its “Everything Data” plans on Palm Pre. These plans offer cheaper services to Smartphone users in comparison to other service providers like Verizon and AT&T. A Palm Pre user can take full advantage of the Sprint plans and save up to $1430.
Let’s have a look at the simply amazing first-ever software features of this smartphone. Palm .Pre runs on the new webOS which is developed by Palm. This OS allows multi-tasking and introduces a new feature called Palm Synergy™. Synergy enables the following in Palm Pre:
Layered Calendars- It brings together all your contacts-business, personal and others from online calendars of Outlook, Facebook and Google in to one centralized view. You can also toggle between these calendars.
Connected Contacts- It links together same contacts listed in different online calendars so that the users can view all the information of a contact at one place.
Combined Messaging- Conversations with the same person at different times whether it is through IM or Text Messaging, is grouped together in a chat-style view. Your online contacts are highlighted and you can start your conversation with a single touch.
The Palm Pre webOS treats the different phone applications as “activity cards”. You can open, close, move and navigate easily between the different apps—mail, maps, photos, websites like flipping through a deck of cards. Palm webOS is based on HTML5, CSS and JavaScript standards. PalmPre integrates GPS in this smartphone in a unique way. The GPS, clock and calendar system enables downloading maps for addresses in your appointments. Thus a Palm Pre user will know when, where and how to reach for and appointment. GPS will also enable geotagging of photo images in this smartphone.
The hardware design of Palm Pre is sleek. It weighs nearly 135gms.This sliding phone has got a glossy plastic casing with rounded edges and a QWERTY keyboard. When the Palm Pre is closed it looks similar but smaller than an iPhone. Below the 3.1” touchscreen, there is a small led-lit black area. It has a button in the middle which is used for calling up the activity cards. This black area is called the “gesture are” where you can swipe your thumb or fingers. The responsive HVGA display of Palm Pre with 480×320 resolution is very similar to that of an iPhone. The QWERTY keyboard has the keys in a portrait arrangement. At the removable back of the phone there is a 3MegaPixel camera with LED flash. Palm Pre has removable, rechargeable battery.
This phone has a MicroUSB port for charging and connecting to PC, Wi-Fi, high-speed connectivity (EVDO Rev. A), high performance web browser, Bluetooth, e-mail including Outlook EAS for corporates and personal e-mail also. Palm has 8GB internal memory which is non-removable. Palm Pre has accelerometer, light sensor and proximity sensor. The phone has an AGPS chip and on-board navigation software from Sprint.
