Google wikipedia craigslist black out to protest sopa bill

Web on strike !! Big web companies and groups like Google, WordPress, Wikipedia, Reddit, Mozilla are participating to blacken out their websites against passing the bills SOPA(Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA(Protect IP Act) in U.S.

Google is working while they only have blackened the logo and posted a message on their home page saying “Tell Congress please don’t censor the web”. This is not only visible to users from North America but outside also.

A new website (sopastrike.com) has been put in action for all other websites to join and blacken their website starting from 8 am EST to 8 pm EST on 18th Jan 2012. Lots of websites are registering and blacking out their homepage. For example Wikimedia Foundation declared that the Wikipedia community started to black out their English version to worldwide to protest against SOPA and PIPA. Free Screen Capture Tool Greenshot review

If you are a developer or web master or in the marketing field, no matter what profession you are in you sometime needs to capture current screen or region for some work where the picture tells a thousand words. In such situation a screen capture utility can be very helpful in taking the entire screen or part of the screen and save it as a picture to attach or to paste it in the word draft or email.

One of the best screen capturing tools, is TechSmith’s “SnagIt” which is very advanced and has all the features you will love. But this doesn’t come free. On other hand if you would need to do some basic work like just capturing part of the screen and doing some editing like adding text or arrow then you can go for free screen capture tool. If you Google it you will find plenty of screen capturing utilities. However some have limited features or we don’t know can bring any spyware in our system also.

Recently I came across one good tool which is not only “FREE” but also “Open Source” and published under GPL. This is called Greenshot. As per their license it can be used as free of charge even in commercial environment as well as in personal or business use. This sounds so exciting, right? Let’s dig into more.

Features:

It helps to take complete or partial screen shot
It has hot key to know when to take the screen shot
Captured screenshot can be saved as file or can be copied to clipboard to paste in email or document which is very handy to use.
The captured screen shot can be sent to printer to print as well as can be used as an attachment in email.
It hides in the task-bar and so never interferes with your work. Only comes up if you have pressed the hot key or click on it in the task bar.
Lightweight to download and takes very less disc space.

Editing Feature- After capturing the screen or part of the screen you can edit the image before sending it or pasting in email. The editing feature is very powerful and can allow you to write anything in any available fonts in bold, italic and with shadow effect.

The have arrow pointer as well so you can point some specific area with it. You can highlight by drawing the rectangle box or ellipse.

Cons-

Can not record video.
Editing feature should have more options like erase, spraying colors etc.
Automatic updates not available (I couldn’t find it).

Conclusion- If you consider the price and the other features you are getting you can ignore the cons and can continue using it. I have been using it for a long time and is very satisfied. I would recommend it. However if you are looking for very advanced features and options then I would recommend buying SnagIt or other tool available in the market. But this application does its job very decently.

Netflix Inc (Nasdaq: NFLX) is splitting out its streaming service and the DVD by mail service into two individual businesses. The streaming service will still continue the name as “Netflix” however they are renaming their DVD by mail service to “Qwikster” which refers to quick delivery to the its users.

The split into two individual businesses happened to overcome the negative reaction and complaints the company received from its primary users for the recent changes in the pricing. Just few weeks ago they declared new pricing and new lay out of their popular services. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings published a blog post last night in an apologetic manner by saying “I messed up. I owe everyone an explanation”.

The user needs to access a separate website to access their DVD queue while the streaming users can maintain their instant queue. It is not clear from the blog post that how it will work for users in the combo plan. As for some DVD we have seen instant titles are also available.

For the two individual businesses they are planning to add new features to make them attractive. The DVD by mail service Qwikster will have the upgrade option to video games to rent for Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 series just like the upgrade option for Blu-ray and the mail will only work throughout the United States. The Netflix streaming service for TV shows and movies might be available for global users.

As per Netflix CEO, they will provide more features and each individual team will look into each of the business. So in future we hope to see more popular and new titles to be available quickly in Netflix streaming, isn’t it?

All about Windows Azure Cloud Computing Platform

Microsoft has come up with yet another incredible cloud computing based technology called Windows Azure. Windows Azure is an operating system with all cloud computing features. To understand about this new technology, we need to know something about cloud computing first. The cloud computing is a networking concept for running the application programs on one server, which uses the services available to another server or personal computer on the internet. When you execute an application program, this networking concept enables automatic saving of files over the internet to a location assigned to you based on the type of application program. Generally, the location will be assigned by the cloud computing service provider.

Windows Azure is developed based on the cloud computing concept. The Windows Azure has all typical functionalities of the cloud computing environment. The salient features of Windows Azure are client-server model, autonomic computing, utility computing, and grid computing. All these features make the Windows Azure a reliable and powerful operating system. The client-server model feature is very well known among the developers. As the Windows Azure is based on client-server, so the overall computing architecture is simplified. This simplified architecture allows the developer to do programming in an easy manner.

Autonomic computing feature of Windows Azure allows automatic diagnosis of performance issues of a server or server peripherals in the network. It also solves the issues if the software has the ability to solve it, thus making the servers to be more robust and reliable. Utility computing feature takes care of the power required for processing as well as the storage capacity. Based on the agreement between the cloud computing service provider and the software development company, the resources such as power and the storage capacity can be provided. Grid computing feature is preferred by many organizations. The basic idea of grid computing is creation of grid of servers and making the resources available according to the demand, thus ensuring that the Windows Azure offers the grid computing services without much disturbance.

Windows Azure can be mainly used for developing web applications that will fully support the Microsoft products. It also provides better environment for web hosting services for the Internet information Services and Microsoft.Net framework, thus providing full compatibility for the Microsoft ASP.NET web applications. Windows Azure also supports other languages like PHP, REST, SOAP and, XML, and facilitates trusty features also, so that applications supported by the languages such as PHP can be upgraded and executed in quick manner. Windows Azure facilitates storage of data in a well-organized way such that data can be accessed easily and quickly. The data can be in any form such as graphs, charts, and tables. Windows Azure ensures high protection to the data. It also provides backward compatibility with the other servers, thus realizing a portable service. Windows Azure supports different network protocols. Various workloads can be provided for building, modifying, testing, debugging, and distributing scalable applications. Windows Azure enables batch processing of data with without compromising the performance.
Windows Azure operates at great speed. Also the cost of development and maintenance of Windows Azure is relatively less, thus reducing the overall cost of infrastructure. The Windows Azure reduces the man-hour and also and provides quick assistance to the customers. It is easy to maintain as it needs less human intervention. It has the power to mange the hardware components automatically of the server. It also offers the Microsoft Visual Studio tool to build, test, debug, and run the web applications. It facilitates the calculation and storage capabilities in a dynamic manner based on the needs of the customers.

Mozilla finally has released the new version of Firefox 3.6 with lots of new and great features. The most significant improvement they have made by increasing the speed of Firefox 20% faster than the old 3.5 version. The new version of Firefox includes TraceMonkey JavaScript engine which helps to increase the speed. Using this, any website gets loaded 20% faster than the old version.

Another important feature is the Personas. The theme section has been enhanced to include thousands of easy to install themes. So you can change the look and feel of your browser with a single click which matches your personality. Good News for Nintendo Wii owner and Netflix subscriber. Finally Netflix is providing their popular instant movie streaming service to the Nintendo Wii console which is the fastest selling home console in the US market till date. Netflix has declared in their official website. This feature will be available to the Nintendo Wii owner this Spring.

Earlier Netflix’s silverlight based streaming service is only available to the Xbox 360 and PS3 systems. If you are on the move a lot and don’t have a cell phone with packet data support, then this software is not for you as it does not have SMS support as of now. Although Zbang does plan to introduce it soon, there is no confirmed date announced for the same

No support for Orkut, MySpace and other websites.

Although the makers of Zbang have done a commendable job by making such a platform, it’s still in a very nascent stage and it only has support for Facebook and Twitter as of now.

Summing it up

Overall, Zbang is a truly innovative & revolutionary platform and the best part is that it’s Free. The first one that integrates so many platforms into one simplified and easy-to-use application; there are still small issues that need to be resolved. Though on a scale of 1 to 5 I’d give it 4.7.
